From Apprentice to Operations Manager for high flyer Nuala
Nuala has enjoyed a meteoric career in the 12 years she has been with Boardman Bros. She started as a co-ordinator in the shipping department and has risen to the dizzy heights of Operations Manager with full responsibility for all the company’s entire international logistics operation. And to cap it all, in 2012 she was awarded Boardman Employee of the Year!
Boardman Bros supplies fashion accessories to some of the UK’s biggest high street retail chains. It sources products made to the company’s designs from suppliers in the Far East and India. Nuala’s job is to manage the flow of these shipments into Boardman’s Manchester warehouse and then on to the eventual customer.
Nuala left school with 9 GCSEs A-C but decided that college life was not for her and wanted to get straight into work. However she was not against learning and with the support of her employer she enrolled on a Level 2 NVQ in Administration followed by a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service with Mantra Learning. She then progressed to complete a Level 3 Apprenticeship and in 2007 was awarded Apprentice of the Year by the Learning and Skills Council.
But Nuala was not going to stop there. She had set her sights on becoming a manager and enrolled on a part-time Foundation Degree course in Logistics Management that was run jointly by Mantra and Bolton University. She passed this with flying colours and has stayed on at Bolton for a further year to gain a BSc (Hons) in Supply Chain and Logistics Management.
Nuala has a passion for the world of logistics and believes that the training she has completed with Mantra has inspired her to keep on learning and achieving in her career. “Mantra has supported me and given me the confidence to develop and grow within my career, I now manage a team of 6 people and I am actively supporting their training and development.”

“I chose the route of combining full-time employment with relevant training because I wanted to be out working but also wanted to better my qualifications. I am extremely grateful to both Boardman Brothers and Mantra Learning for helping me achieve so much.”
